Mayhem Racing Enters Two Cars in Headwaters ClubRally

STACY, MINNESOTA -- There will be two Mayhem Racing entries at the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Headwaters ClubRally in Park Rapids, Minnesota, this weekend; the Production GT Mitsubishi Eclipse for Mark Utecht and Brenda Lewis, and the car that took Utecht and Lewis to the 2000 Group 5 Championship, a Dodge Omni GLH Turbo, to be driven by Mary Utecht with Heidi Meyers as co-driver. This will be the first time Mary or Heidi have competed in a ClubRally, though both have acted as rally support crew members for many seasons.

"Mary has supported my racing efforts over the years," said Mark Utecht, "so this is her opportunity to get behind the wheel and compete for a change. She used to drive in autocrosses and was quite good at that, so I expect she will do just fine racing in the forest."

"I’m pretty excited to get the chance to drive", said Mary Utecht. "I don’t know how competitive we will be, so our goals are simple to finish and to have fun."

Mark Utecht and Brenda Lewis currently lead the Production GT points in the SCCA ProRally series. They took first in class at the Sno*Drift ProRally in Michigan, and were second in PGT at the Oregon Trail ProRally in April.

Production GT is considered a "stock" class, allowing very few modifications other than for safety. The Mayhem Racing Eclipse has Sparco racing seats for driver and co-driver, Willans safety harnesses, a Mayhem Racing custom built roll cage, Auto Meter Gauges, a Terratrip rally computer, and a Terraphone intercom. Out front are Hella HID (High Intensity Discharge) Rally Lights in a custom pod, and the car rides on Michelin Rally tires. The only performance enhancement is the addition of a GReddy Profec Boost controller.

The Group 5 1986 Dodge Omni Turbo is a front-wheel drive machine, a limited production, performance version of the popular Dodge Omni. More performance modifications are allowed under the Group 5 rules, but two-wheel drive is a limitation. Suspension changes include the addition of Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs, and the stock brakes have been replaced with racing brakes from Porterfield. For driver and co-driver safety and convenience, the interior has been replaced with racing seats and harnesses, and a Mayhem Racing custom-built rollcage, a Terratrip rally computer, and a Terraphone intercom. Hella Rally Lights are mounted out front for added visibility during night stages.

Utecht and Lewis won the SCCA ProRally Group 5 driver and co-driver titles in 2000 aboard a Dodge Omni GLH. In addition, they were awarded the Jon Woodner Cup, presented to the most successful two-wheel drive competitors in the ProRally series. The pair were also given the SCCA Land O’ Lakes Region Rally Driver and Rally Co-driver of the Year trophies at the region’s annual awards banquet. Utecht was the 1997 O2 (later renamed to Group 5) ClubRally Champion for 1997, also in a Dodge Omni GLH.

Mayhem Racing is based in Stacy, Minnesota, just north of the Twin Cities. Team manager is Mark's wife, Mary Utecht. J. B. Lewis is Chief Mechanic on the team's 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX.
