RallyHo! Team Plans Ice Attack

DUBLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- RallyHo! Motorsports driver Mike White will team up with 2000 SCCA ProRally regional class Production Champion Ted Mendham for a six-hour ice race in Maine this Sunday. Two of White's and Mendham's service crew members will also field a car in the event. The race will feature about 50 cars running wheel-to-wheel on the ice of New Meadows River in West Bath, Maine. The event organizers require all entrants to run on street legal tires. Greer Enterprises of West Allis, WI, a leading supplier of Nokian brand tires, is supplying the RallyHo! team with ice tires and studded snow tires for the event. "We're very excited to have Greer on board," White said. "Pat Greer has been a big supporter of Saabs and rallying over the years, and we're proud to showcase Nokian tires on our cars. They're simply the best winter tires available."

White and Mendham, of Lyndeborough, NH, will be running their recently acquired 1988 Volkswagen Jetta GLI in the race. "We wanted to run a Saab, but the Jetta was such a great deal that we couldn't pass it up," White said. "Ted and I will have a lot of fun terrorizing the ice with it." Recent testing at the local luge track (better known as White's driveway) proved the car to be a strong runner. "It's fast. The Jetta is EVIL!" said Mendham.

Two RallyHo! service crewmembers also are entering a car in the event. Crew Chief Brett Rudolf of Manchester, NH, and crew member Andrew Steere of Dover, NH, will be driving Steere's 1988 Merkur XR4Ti, nicknamed "Fiasco," in the race. "Brett and I figured we would be better off in a rear-drive car," Steere said. "After I retired Fiasco from daily driving, I figured it would be fun to use in ice races and hillclimb events." Rudolf and Steere performed several upgrades to the car for the ice race, including welding the differential so both rear wheels spin together, adding a 250-pound space-saver spare tire made of lead over the rear wheels, and hanging fuzzy dice from the rearview mirror. "The Nokian tires really help the car bite the ice; the difference is amazing," Steere said. "We should surprise people." Rudolf - who changes tires for NASCAR Modified series driver Ed Flemke, Jr. when he's not working with RallyHo! - is excited to be sharing the driving duties for the race. "Everybody knows real cars are rear drive. We've got the hot ticket!"

White has spent the winter upgrading his 1980 Saab 99 rally car and is planning a Northeastern United States-based schedule this season, including runs in the Susquehannock Trail ProRally in Wellsboro, PA, on June 1-2; the Maine Forest Rally in Rumford, ME, on July 27-28; and Black River Stages in Harrisville, NY, in late September.

SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) ProRally is often described as "Real cars, on real roads, going real fast." While rally cars must remain licensed and registered for street use, they also must be able to withstand incredible punishment on rough forest roads at racing speeds. Rally teams race against the clock on closed roads.
